VISIT TO CHUMPO MUSEUM

On 18th April 2026, Eden Higher Secondary School, Dimapur organized an educational visit to the Chumpo Museum, Sovima, Dimapur. The objective of this tour was to provide students with meaningful learning experiences as part of their academic studies.

A group consisting of three teachers and six students from class 10 and were warmly received by the museum caretaker and guide, Mr. Moses Yanthan.

He explained that “Chumpo” is derived from the Lotha language and refers to a Morung (traditional bachelor’s dormitory). The Chumpo Museum was established by Rev. Father. Dr. Abraham Lotha.in 2007 and was inaugurated by retired IAS officer K. K. Sema. Its main aim is to preserve these valuable heritage items.

Mr. Moses Yanthan explained the exhibits in detail. Some notable items included wooden carvings, shields used for protection during fights, traditional utensils such as rice pounding boards, Chonpfü (cooking utensils), Chapa/ Yinkhi (bamboo storage boxes), and bamboo baskets used for carrying agricultural produce.

The Museum also displayed a log drum, which was traditionally used to signal important events such as the arrival and departure of enemies. Another notable attraction was a wooden statue of a woman named Tumri associated with a legend of her marriage to an Ahom king. These exhibits provided valuable insights into the traditions and lifestyle of the Naga people. A dormitory style bed and an outdoor learning space made of stones were also displayed representing traditional learning practices where young boys acquired skills and listened to folktales from elders

We also visited museum library, which houses more than 4,000 books and its open to students and scholars free of cost. The visit was highly educational and informative .It enriched students’ knowledge through both explanation and direct observation of cultural artifacts.
